Recently, we have begun to launch the fourth iteration of our LanguagePod sites. I thought it might be appropriate to re-visit the previous three.
#1 ChinesePod when it launched in September 2005:
#2 ChinesePod with its first big update on January 1, 2006:
#3 ChinesePod changing its logo and getting off WordPress in March 2007:
#4 And soon, ChinesePod at the end of May 2008:

Interesting that the newer version appears much more simple than previous ones - any reasons for that?

Absolutely. We believe that the simpler the site is, the easier it should be to use. Steve Krug’s ‘Don’t Make Me Think’ is recommended reading here at Praxis.

Is that John Pasden in the picture? If I remember correctly, the earliest versions highlighted Ken. The current one show a picture of Ken and Jenny. Now John got in… I think this is great, it shows that ChinesePod is really the creation of the whole team!

Yes, it is John. John joined ChinesePod a 1 year+ into things. He is definitely a ‘linguistic mountain of strength’ on the team, but the fact is there are 50 of us in Praxis that make all this happen. They are all talented people and testimony to how Shanghai is be becoming THE international city to be in!

yes.. i don’t think anyone would argue that the more complex the site is the easier it is to use.
but, when v3 was released, i remember a few praxis employees/investors recommending steve krug’s book back then as well, however v3 was such a nightmare to navigate, especially with those abstract links and no easy way to quickly view new content, until it reverted back almost entirely to v2’s wordpress layout.
i’ve seen what i assume is v4, on spanishpod. i like it compared to v3, definitely slicker and faster than v3, so good job there.
